Columbus-Brinkmann
The Text of this first 30 pages was Simple but detailed. It was an easy read but full of detail as well. I knew that Columbus was not the nice storytale hero he may have been portrayed to be, but didn"t know he was so crule and as big of a criminal. Something that surprised me was how little numbered English troops would fight agains such big numbered aztecs and would win numerous times. Something I didn"t know was the black legend. This was the concept that the conquerors killed, butchered, and tortured the indians, then steeling their gold. Another big thing I learned was ecomienda. it allowed the government to give indians to people as slaves as long as they promised to christianze them.

Brinko! Great summary of the reading, now what can we take away from this reading when we think critically? How can encomienda be considered an economic concept? How has legend and history shaped the image of the new world, and our culture today? What would have happened if the natives won their revolt against the British? Keep developing critical questions while you read, and you will do well on your essays! Proficient.
ReplyDeleteGood job on the summary. What do you think about the encomienda? It sure would be nice to go to a foreign country and boss the japannes around, telling them you were goin to christinise them. Getting free labor for something they dont even know about. What a deal!!!
